Fresh Produce: Berries, Cucumbers, Summer Squash, and More!

Tons of fresh produce is popping up at your favorite local farms here in Southern Oregon, and we’re ready to deliver it to your home – anywhere from Ashland to Grants Pass, Jacksonville to Eagle Point, and every where in between (and close by)!

What’s New

The most delicious fresh black, blue and raspberries are now available from Pennington Farm, and Ella Bella Farm has some of the most scrumptious strawberries we’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. Not only are the pints of strawberries over-flowing from Ella Bella, but they have 5 different varieties! We make sure to share a new variety every week.

Wandering Roots Farm has helped us put some new items on our list too. These include the first cucumbers of the year, cauliflower, sugar snap peas and purple carrots. Fry Family Farm also has some early firsts, including fresh basil, zucchini and crookneck squash.

Get Your Share!

There’s never been a better time to sign-up with Rogue Produce, and get all of this amazing fresh produce delivered to your door. We’ve got loads of other local food products on the list too, including grass fed organic beef, cheese, olive oil, bread, coffee, pastries, and much more.

This week is extra special though. Our Standard Share is more than $7 over our promised value. We usually go over our promised value so that you typically get a greater market value than what you actually pay to sign up for our service.

If you’re not convinced, make sure to check out this previous blog post to see the 10 ten reasons why our current customers love to be a part of Rogue Produce.

Happy Summer!

Service Upgrade: The Plus Share!

Rogue Produce has taken steps to get even better this week with a service upgrade, the “Plus Share.” This upgrade gives every Rogue Produce customer a chance to enjoy additional local products every week without being charged any processing fee. Some CSA Items

When we made the shift to every week deliveries in May, we faced the same challenge we do every year with our Standard Share. We keep the Standard CSA Share simple and manageable by maintaining the value each week to between $21 and $25. We emphasize loading the share with as much fresh local produce as possible, leaving little room for additional products such as our delicious olive oil from Pasture 42, goat cheese chevre from Mama Terra Micro-Creamery, sauerkraut from Pickled Planet, and many others. We want to support these businesses by purchasing their amazing products as much as possible, and the Plus Share enables us to do just that!

You can see the contents of the Plus Share at the Online Market Page every week. You can purchase credits for the Plus Share for $25 a piece, and we’ll provide at least that much value in the Plus Share every week – and usually more. This week, for example, the Plus Share consists of Arbequina Olive Oil ($15.95), and Caramelized Goat Cheese Chevre ($10.50), with a total value of $26.45.

It’s so easy too! All you have to do is notify us by text (541-301-3426) or email (localtolocal@rogueproduce.com) if you want the Plus Share. Or, as an Individual Account holder, you can simply select it as part of your custom order. As long as you order the Standard Share and/or the Plus Share, you won’t be charged the $6 processing fee.

Usually the order deadline for the Plus Share will be the same as for our regular orders, which is Tuesday by 4:00pm. However, this week we need to have your orders for the Plus Share in by Monday evening at 6:00pm, since they include the Mama Terra Cheese, which we need to order earlier than other items.

Waste Not, Farm Want! Food Scraps to Farms.

local farms compost your scraps! We Get Your Scraps to Local Farms

That’s right – the food scraps you might be placing in your trash every day are not waste – they are a resource. Small farms in the Rogue Valley can compost the organic matter from your kitchen to replenish their soil with vital nutrients. Rogue Produce is the only service in the Rogue Valley that picks-up your food scraps every week and delivers them to local farms to use in their composting operations.

Rogue Produce’s program, Community Compost, has been in operation since 2011, and has moved tons of residential food scraps from household to farm. Community Compost is a way you can directly support your local farms and reduce the burden on our local landfill. Community Compost is common sense, and it’s what makes Rogue Produce a “full circle” service. You can purchase fresh produce from our Online Farmers Market that is grown in soil nourished by food scraps from the previous year. This is a model we are enthusiastically expanding, and we’d greatly appreciate your help in doing so.

Start Composting, Receive Market Credit!

For a limited time, Rogue Produce is offering a $20 credit toward any of our CSA options (which includes custom ordering through our Online Farmers Market), when you sign-up for 3-months of our Community Compost service. If you’re already a Rogue Produce customer (or if you become one), you receive a 10% discount on our Community Compost program.

The compost program is simple:  accumulate your kitchen food scraps (pretty much anything except meat and fish), and set them out every week on your pick up day. Rogue Produce will visit your home, empty your compost container (you provide your own container), and you can start filling it up again for the next pick-up.

Once you start participating in our program, you’ll never want to throw a banana peel in the garbage again. Many of our customers have started with our program – which is very easy – and eventually transitioned into using a composting system at their home to replenish the soil in their garden. Community Compost is a great way to start wasting less and replenishing more.

Delivering Local Favorites

As we expand home delivery of our year-round CSA and Online Farmers Market to new customers in Grants Pass and the surrounding area, we’d like to share about all of the local producers you can support – and their amazing products you can enjoy – by shopping at Rogue Produce. In addition to fresh produce from many of our local farms, our list includes breads (gluten and non-gluten), cheeses (goat and cow), olive oil, vinegar, grass-fed beef, superfoods, and much more. This post is the first of several in which we will introduce some of our fine partners in Southern Oregon.

Organicos Bakery

Rice BreadOrganicos has established itself as one of the most praised producers of gluten-free breads and pizza crusts. Based in Phoenix, they have several varieties of delicious sandwich breads, including multi-grain seeded, rice, sunflower oat, and their most popular cinnamon raisin. We love these breads because in addition to being gluten-free, they also contain no egg or dairy products, which is often a hard find for families with members who are vegan or who have dairy or egg allergies. You can’t beat these breads for taste, nor can you beat the great price of these products at Rogue Produce.

Rogue Creamery

Rogue Creamery CheesesTheir cheese are already world renowned, and how lucky we are to have an amazing company like the Rogue Creamery in Central Point. What you may not know is that Rogue Creamery recently became certified organic, and they have always produced the most amazing varieties of cheese, and we also sell their delicious butter. They even include local ales in some of their recipes, and they are most famous for their blue cheeses.

Rise Up! BakeryRise Up! Bread

We are grateful to have discovered Rise Up! Artisan Bread based out of the Applegate Valley to supply us with a variety of breads, including sprouted multi-grain, sourdough, levain, and many more. There is so much to learn about this totally sustainable producer, and we highly recommend you visit their website.

Pickled Planet

Love Kraut

This is another unique company we are so lucky to have in our area. Based out of Ashland, Pickled Planet produces a huge selection of krauts, with almost every combination of fermented veggies you can imagine. It’s always a good idea to have a jar of one (or many) of their krauts in the fridge to combine with whatever you’re cooking up in the kitchen.

Pennington Farm

PiesOh my! If you have a sweet tooth look no further. Pennington Farms supplies Rogue Produce with incredible pies and turnovers created from the fabulous berries they grow on their farm on highway 238, between Grants Pass and Jacksonville. They’ve also recently begun producing a line of granola that any child or adult will love. Roasted Brussel Sprouts

This week's supply is from Chris at Say Hay Farms near Guinda, CA.

This week’s supply is from Chris at Say Hay Farms near Guinda, CA.

If you are looking for a tasty, nutritious snack or side dish, look no further than Roasted Brussel Sprouts.  Brussel sprouts are a nutrition powerhouse, think green cabbage times ten!  They are rich in vitamins and minerals, including but not limited to vitamins A, B complex, C, manganese, and omega 3 fatty acids.  Medical researchers are finding increasing evidence that consuming Brussel sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables on a regular basis promote health and reduce risk of illness, including some cancers.  We are all about eating for optimal nutrition, but not at the expense of enjoyment.  I hope you give this recipe a try because these are not the Brussel sprouts that your mother used to make, I promise.

Ingredients

½ – 1lb Brussel Sprouts, cleaned and halved
2 Tbsp Garlic Olive Oil from Pasture 42
2 Tbsp Rogue Creamery Butter, melted
½ Tsp Salt, or to taste
Fresh Cracked Pepper
1/3 c. Parmesan Cheese

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F.  While the oven warms, melt the butter and prepare the Brussel Sprouts.  Rinse each sprout and remove outer leaves if necessary.  Slice each sprout in half and place in bowl or Ziploc bag.  Add the butter, olive oil, salt and pepper.  Toss until each of the sprouts is covered in the oil mixture.  Let them marinate for 30 minutes on the counter, re-tossing periodically.

Place the marinated Brussel Sprouts on a baking sheet.  Roast in the oven for 20 minutes, add the Parmesan Cheese and continue roasting for another 20 minutes.  Remove from the oven, let them cool for a few minutes and enjoy!  For culinary interest or variation, experiment with your favorite seasonings.  Connect with us on Facebook or in the comments below and let us know what you think!  We’d love to hear about your favorite recipe variations and see photos of your culinary creations!

Wishing You Health & Happiness,

Your Friends at Rogue Produce
