The herd is grass fed during the spring and summer months, when the grass is plentiful. During the winter months, they eat alfalfa hay, which is purchased from local hay growers. About 10 to 12 weeks before the steers are slaughtered, Salant supplements their feed with a healthy grain mix (this is called “grain finish”). Slaughtering takes place at a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspected facility in Springfield, Oregon. No hormones or antibiotics are ever fed to our Angus-crossbred black cattle or dairy steers.
